Bhubaneswar: In an alleged case of hit and run, a labourer was run over by a speeding car while he was sleeping on the footpath in Rajmahal Square here in the wee hours today. The identity of the deceased labourer is yet to be ascertained.
According to eyewitnesses, at around 1.00 -1.40 AM on Saturday, a speeding car veered off the road onto the footpath ran over the labourer who was sleeping there and dragged him to a distance before wheezing towards Lingipur. The injured labourer was rushed to the Capital Hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors.
Several other labourers who were also sleeping on the footpath there had a close shave in the incident. The driver of the car fled from the spot. As a few bikers chased the car, the driver managed to flee by deserting the car on the river Daya embankment at Lingipur.
An autopsy of the body has been conducted.
Dhauli police have seized the accident-causing car.
