Bhubaneswar: A contract labourer was killed near the circulating area of Kantabanji Railway Station on Thursday, when a wall collapsed during debris clearance work being carried out by a private contractor using an earth mover.
The deceased contract labourer has been identified as Umesh Rishidev. He was aged about 56 years.
According to an East Coast Railway (ECoR) press release, prompt rescue operations were carried out and an inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident. Preventive measures are being reinforced to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future, the release added .
The release stated that the contractor responsible for the work has been directed to provide necessary ex-gratia and financial support to the next of kin of the deceased, in line with contractual obligations and welfare provisions.
East Coast Railway is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all outsourced workers engaged in its projects. A thorough review of safety protocols and on-ground practices are being undertaken to ensure the same at all work sites, the release added.
