Koraput: Dr Sasmita Das, employed in District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Jeypore, landed in trouble for posting a selfie clicked in the OT when an operation was underway. Das acted contrary to the Hippocratic oath taken by doctors to treating the ill to the best of one's ability and to preserve a patient's privacy.
The incident occurred in October 31, when a woman in labour was rushed to the DHH for delivery. Sasmita Das and three other doctors performed all pre-surgery steps and proceeded to the operation theatre for the delivery.
Taking her mobile phone into the operation theatre, Das clicked a selfie when the operation was underway. The doctors can be seen busy at work in the background while Das poses in front of the camera.
The photo was later uploaded to social media after which locals were panic-stricken and stated that the doctors were putting the patients’ lives in jeopardy. Several people also raised questions on why did the other doctors not object to the clicking of the picture.
Meanwhile, some reports have stated that the doctor had taken the picture to post it on the hospital’s Whatsapp group in order to inform the authorities about the commencement of operation in the revived OT. Notably on October 15, the DHH was shifted from Koraput to sub-divisional hospital in Jeypore.
Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Lalit Mohan Rath has ordered a swift inquiry into the matter. He confirmed to OMMCOM NEWS that a probe will launched and necessary action will be taken following that.
