Bhubaneswar: A day after a woman journalist allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train here, Dhauli police arrested the accused husband on Thursday.
Based on the complaint filed by deceased woman journalist Madhumita Parida’s family members, police took action against the accused husband Sridhara Jena and forwarded him to court, said Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Prateek Singh.
Briefing the media, DCP said, “Madhumita and Sridhara were not on good terms. The accused husband had threatened Madhumita to give her a divorce for which she was in distress. Madhumita had gone to Dhauli police on July 23 accusing her husband of not coming home despite being on leave for 12 days. However, the matter was resolved.”
It is learnt that Madhumita’s family members on Monday filed a complaint at Dhauli police station after she attempted suicide by consuming phenyl. The issue was temporarily resolved at the police station, where Madhumita’s husband, an Indian Air Force personnel, signed an undertaking promising to refrain from abusing or assaulting his wife and to end his relationships with other women.
Police have seized the accused’s mobile phone and started interrogating Jena’s elder brother to ascertain the exact reason behind Madhumita’s suicide.
It is pertinent to mention that Madhumita, who works for a web channel in Bhubaneswar, married Sridhara on March 1, after a 5-year relationship. However, even after marriage, Madhumita alleged that her husband, Shridhar, maintained an extramarital relationship. In a video recorded before her death, Madhumita mentioned that her husband was planning to marry another girl and had even given her a divorce notice. The video has gone viral on social media.
