**Kalahandi:** After the death of a civilian and an OISF havildar in face-off between villagers and security guards on Monday in front of Vedanta Alumina factory, the company announced Rs 25 lakh ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased.
According to reports, the two groups reached a mutual understanding following a meeting between the agitators and Vedanta authorities in the presence of Kalahandi Suprintendent of Police Battula Gangadhar.
The tension in Lanjigarh’s Vedanta Alumina factory took a violent turn on Monday after irate Rengalpali villagers who have been displaced from their land were trying to break into the factory to demand jobs. Security guards of Vedanta resorted to lathi-charge to stop the agitators and as a result of this, one Dani Patra was killed in the face-off and over 40 persons were injured.
Irate locals then staged road blockade and set the guards’ room on fire following which OISF havildar Sujit Minz was charred to death.
“We will submit our statement to the authorities and provide every support to resolve the matter. We urge the people of Lanjigarh Block to maintain peace,” stated Vedanta spokesperson. Wife of Dani Patra has also been offered a job at the factory.
