Bhubaneswar: A leopard trapped in a poacher’s snare in Karatapata Forest Section in Angul district died shortly after being rescued by the Forest Department team. The leopard was caught in the snare, set to target wild boars, on Monday night and remained stuck until Tuesday morning, when locals alerted authorities.
The Forest Department, along with veterinarians and experts, worked to free the leopard, but it succumbed to its injuries. The exact cause of death is still unknown, but prolonged entanglement may have caused serious internal injuries.
The incident raises concerns about poaching and vigilance lapses in protected forest areas. Locals and wildlife observers are calling for stronger patrolling and accountability from forest authorities.
An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the leopard’s death.
