Bhubaneswar: Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) celebrated Local Self Government Day with great fanfare on Wednesday. On this occasion, programmes such as awareness campaign, health check-up camp, inauguration of public toilet & clean drinking water project, friendly football match and Rangoli competition were organized by the RMC.
On Wednesday morning, an awareness campaign on cleanliness was flagged off by the women Safai Karmacharis, in the presence of Municipal Commissioner Dr Shubhakar Mohapatra.
Earlier in the day, Dr Mohapatra paid honours to Utkal Gourab Madhusudhan Das by garlanding his statue at the Madhusudhan Chowk here.
The awareness campaign proceeded from Madhusudan Street through Ambedkar Street and reached the RMC Office. A street play was also performed near Ambedkar Street by local artists. In which an appeal was made for a plastic-free city.
The procession organized under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner, was attended by all ward members, cleaning staff, and RMC staff. Later, Dr Mohapatra hoisted the National Flag on the premises of RMC office in the presence of all employees of the civic body.
Dr Mohapatra inaugurated a public toilet constructed as a part of Chief Minister’s Karma Tatpara Abhiyan (Mukta). Total 53 such public toilets are being constructed in the city which will be inaugurated in phases.
Similarly, a clean drinking water project was inaugurated near Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Fitness Park in Udit Nagar. A total of 20 such drinking water projects have been planned in the city which would also be inaugurated in phases.
Apart from this, a football match was organised by the RMC today while a health check-up camp and a Rangoli competition were organized by Jai Prakash Hospital for the employees of Rourkela Municipal Corporation.
Puja Rani Panda stood first in the Rangoli competition while Narmada Barik (DEO) and Banalata Pattnayak came second. Similarly, Swaccha Sathi Jamuna Nayak and DEO Mili Sahu occupied the third position in the competition.
On the occasion, Dr Mohapatra sought people’s cooperation to make Rourkela a clean, beautiful and green city. Rourkela is going to host the Hockey World Cup in 2023. So, the Municipal Commissioner appealed citizens to come along together to build a beautiful city and set an example before the guests.
In the programmes held today, Panposh Sub Collector Daulat Chandrakar, Deputy Commissioner Sudshanshu Bhoi, Dr Gourabamaya Pradhan, Ronit Kumar, Sitadevi Majhi, Assistant Commissioner Sukant Beura, Narendra Kumar Pradhan, Executive Officer-in-Charge Ajay Shah, and all staff of the RMC were present.
