Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a 12-year-old girl died in Puri due to a severe lice infestation that went untreated, leading to a fatal infection. The incident took place at Champagada Sahi under Balanga police limits in Puri district.
The deceased has been identified as Lakshmi Priya Sahu, daughter of Lingaraj Sahu and a Class-VI student of a local school.
Lakshmi had been suffering from lice infection for past several months, but her condition worsened as the infestation spread to her scalp. Despite her mother’s advice to shave her head, Lakshmi refused. The lice had already damaged her scalp, causing a severe infection. Due to the foul smell from her head, the girl reportedly stopped stepping out of the house.
Three days ago, Lakshmi started vomiting blood, and her family took her to Puri District Headquarters Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, with volunteers questioning the parents’ negligence. Besides, Lakshmi’s death serves as a grim reminder of the importance of timely medical attention and proper hygiene.
