Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area has formed over southeast Bangladesh and neighbourhood on Thursday and lay over the same region on Friday under the influence of a cyclonic circulation. It is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over coastal West Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said this morning.
As a result, several parts of Odisha are likely to receive heavy rainfall on Friday. The IMD has issued an orange alert in Kalahandi. Similarly, a yellow alert has been issued in Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada and Gajapati.
According to the weather office, the intensity of rain is likely to increase on Saturday. An orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain has been issued in three districts of Odisha for Saturday. About 70 mm to 200 mm of rain is expected in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sundargarh districts. During the rain, the wind aped will be 40 to 50 km per hour.
The IMD also warned of thunderstorms with lightning in isolated areas of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati districts. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the North Bay of Bengal and the waters along and off the Odisha coast during this period.
