Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department has informed the formation of a low-pressure area over the West-central and Northwest Bay of Bengal, off the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha, as of 5:30 AM IST today. This weather system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 24 hours.
The low-pressure system is expected to move across North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha over the next 48 hours, potentially bringing heavy rainfall to these regions.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching 30–40 kmph at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangapur today.
Besides, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also likely at one or two locations in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Rayagada.
In view of rough sea conditions, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast and over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal, from August 13 to 16.
