Low Pressure Area Over Bay Of Bengal To Trigger Heavy Rainfall In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area has formed over North-West and adjoining West-Central Bay of Bengal off Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coast today morning under influence of yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over North-West Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood.

The system now lies over North-West Bay of Bengal off north Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal coast. Under its influence, heavy rainfall activity is expected to occur in most places over the districts of South and North Odisha for the next five days.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places over the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Gajapati with heavy rainfall at isolated places over the districts of Ganjam, Rayagada, Bolangir, Bargarh, Angul and Nuapada, in the next 24 hours.

On Day 2, heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Rayagada and Bolangir, which may lead to water logging in low lying areas.

Besides, heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places over the districts of Ganjam, Kandhamal, Boudh, Nayagardh and Nuapada.

On Day 3, heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places over the districts of Bargarh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Koraput. And at isolated places over the districts of Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kalahandi and Kandhamal on Day 4.

Further on Day 5, heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places over the districts of Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Nuapada, Nabarangpur and Deogarh.

Under influence of the low pressure area and strong monsoon current, surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is very likely over West-Central adjoining North-West Bay of Bengal and squally weather with strong surface wind speed occassionally reaching 40-50 kmph along and off Odisha coast.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea along and off Odisha coast till 10th August and Northwest & adjoining West-central Bay of Bengal till 11th August 2020.
