Low Pressure Induced Flood Wreaks Havoc In Kendrapada, Malkangiri & Dhenkanal

Kendrapada/Malkangiri/Dhenkanal: Low pressure coupled with SW monsoon has brought moderate to intense rainfall in the districts of Kendrapada, Malkangiri and Dhenkanal causing a flood situation.

Several wards of the Kendrapada district have become waterlogged after the incessant rains. Worst affected are residents of the ward number 13,18 and 20. The district administration has begun the rehabilitation but is facing difficulty as another low pressure looms amid COVID-19 pandemic.

Malkangiri Collector & District Magistrate Manish Agarwal informed that several low-level bridges connecting various block headquarters have been submerged because of the heavy rainfall in past few days. While no loss of life has been reported in the district because of the flood, the assessment of the crop damage will be conducted once the water recedes.

Reports of house damage, however, came in from Chitrakonda and Kalimela blocks. Overall, 34 villages have been affected to various degrees. Agarwal added that assistance has been provided to close to 100 stranded people.

Heavy rainfall created a flood situation in Dhenkanal district as well. Gandia and Parjang block saw the worst. Ward number 4 of Gandia block was completely submerged in water and locals alleged that this because of a proper drainage system in the area. But not just humans, animals were also badly hit because of the floodwater.

A herd of over 50 cows was stranded in a patch of grazing land near Brahmani river as the water body swelled last night. Parjang Tehsildar along with other officials reached the spot late night, however, the rescue was completed today morning.
