Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday predicted heavy rainfall across Odisha over the next four days as the low pressure has intensified into a depression over the Bay of Bengal.
“A Depression has formed and lay centered at 0830 hours IST of today, the 19th July, 2024 over Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal off Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh coasts near latitude 19.2°N and longitude 86.2°E, about 70 km southeast of Puri (Odisha), 130 km East of Gopalpur (Odisha), 130 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 240 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh),” IMD bulletin said.
It is likely to move north-westwards and cross Odisha coast near Puri as a depression during the early morning hours on Saturday. Thereafter, it would move west-northwestwards across Odisha & Chhattisgarh and weaken gradually during the subsequent 24 hours, the weather agency added
Due to heavy rain, flash floods and water logging in low-lying areas, inundation of agriculture fields, and landslides are likely to occur in vulnerable areas. Possibility of damage to kutcha road, houses may occur, the IMD predicted.
As the sea condition would remain rough, the weather office advised fishermen not to venture into northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and along and off Andhra Pradesh, Odisha & West Bengal coasts during the next two days.
Under its influence, the IMD said the state is likely to experience heavy rainfall over the next four days. There is also a warning for very heavy rainfall across the state on July 20, the Met Office said.
