Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area is expected to form over the South Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours, intensifying into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 24, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Taking to his X handle, weather scientist Uma Shankar Das informed, “A cyclonic circulation over the Malacca sea Strait persists, extending up to 5.8 km above sea level. This is likely to lead to the formation of a low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours. It is expected to intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 24, moving west-northwest. Further intensification is possible over the southwest Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours.”
Meanwhile, experts are uncertain whether the potential low-pressure system will develop into a cyclonic storm. Various models have been used to predict its trajectory and intensity, but no clear forecast has been made yet.
Following predictions from various weather models about potential cyclone and rainfall towards the end of the month, farmers in the state are anxious. With mature paddy crops standing in the fields, they fear that any cyclone could cause significant damage.
