Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low-pressure area over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts intensified into a depression on early Saturday morning and under its impact, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangapur districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Sunday, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather office issued a weather advisory for the people of these three districts. Residents of these districts are advised to avoid staying in vulnerable kutcha houses during heavy rainfall to minimize the risk of injury or loss of life. Commuters are urged to check traffic advisories before leaving for their destinations to avoid getting stuck in congested roads. Meanwhile, farmers are advised to make arrangements for drainage of excess water from nursery beds and prepare for sowing of paddy crops and seed collection to minimize crop damage.

The weather department has also issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall to the Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam and Gajapati districts. “Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) and thunderstorms with lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam and Gajapati”, read the IMD report.

For September 2, IMD predicted heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) and thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nabarangapur and Nuapada.

Due to squally weather, the weather department advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the South Odisha coast, Westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.
