Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast has concentrated into a depression, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
As of 5:30 am IST today, the depression is centred near latitude 20.8° N and longitude 88.4° E.
According to the IMD, the depression is currently situated approximately 100 km south-southeast of Sagar Island, 130 km southeast of Digha, 190 km east-northeast of Paradip, and 210 km west-southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh.
The IMD forecast indicates that the system is likely to move nearly northwards, intensify further into a deep depression, and cross the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara by this afternoon.
The weather department has issued alerts for heavy rainfall and strong winds in the affected regions. Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
