Bhubaneswar: A major fire triggered by multiple LPG cylinder explosions caused panic in the Ghatikia Square area of the city on Saturday, reducing a gas storage facility to ashes and raising serious questions over illegal stocking amid an ongoing supply crunch.
According to eyewitnesses, a sudden blaze broke out at a gas shop in Ghatikia Square, quickly intensifying and engulfing the premises. Within moments, a series of powerful explosions followed as as many as 17 gas cylinders reportedly burst almost simultaneously. The deafening blasts shook the surrounding area, sending plumes of thick smoke into the sky and triggering panic among residents and passersby, many of whom were seen running for safety.
Fire Services personnel rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information and launched an intensive firefighting operation. Two additional “striking forces” were deployed to assist in controlling the blaze. After sustained efforts, the fire was brought under control, though the structure housing the cylinders was completely destroyed.
Officials said the intensity of the fire was such that several burning cylinders were flung to a distance due to the explosions, posing further risk to nearby areas.
Two shopkeepers present at the site at the time of the incident sustained injuries but managed to escape narrowly. They reportedly fled the spot in an auto-rickshaw soon after the explosions. Their condition is yet to be officially confirmed.
While no fatalities have been reported so far, the incident has sparked widespread concern among local residents. The presence of a large number of LPG cylinders at a single location has raised questions about possible illegal storage and black marketing activities.
The incident comes at a time when the state is facing an LPG supply shortage, with consumers complaining of delays in cylinder delivery despite bookings.
