Bhubaneswar: Lt Gen Chandi Prasad Mohanty, the General Officer Commanding of Southern Command of the India Army has been appointed as the Vice-Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS). He is the first Odia officer to be appointed as Vice Chief of Army Staff in the Indian Army.
Lt Gen Mohanty is a native of Jagatsinghpur and was born in Jayabada. His father, JK Mohanty was a civil servant, and his mother, Dr Sarada Kumari Mohanty was an Odia professor. He takes over as the 42nd VCOAS of the Indian Army from Lt Gen Satinder Kumar Saini.
He is a recipient of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal. A highly decorated, experienced and accomplished General Officer, Lt Gen Mohanty is an alumnus of Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun, Graduate of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
He was commissioned into The Rajput Regiment on 12 June 1982.
Lt Gen Mohanty, in his illustrious career spanning over 38 years, served across a wide spectrum of conflicts and terrain profiles and has tenated a host of command, Staff and Instructional appointments.
Academically inclined, the General has researched extensively on China, South Asia & North East and is deemed to be an expert in these fields. He was awarded M.Phil in Defence Studies from Madras University and also holds two Masters Degrees in Defence Studies and Management Studies.
His wife Mamun Mohanty is a distinguished academician. She is a Gold Medalist in (Physics) and also has a Gold Medal in Classical Dance from Allahabad University. She has been a renowned Odissi dancer.
Their son Kaustav Mohanty works with an MNC at Milwake in the USA. Additional Director General in Odisha Police, Soumendra Priyadarshi is his brother-in-law.
