Mahanadi Bridge Bus Accident: Detailed Investigation Can Reveal Who Is Responsible, Says Twin City Police Commissioner

**Bhubaneswar: ** A day after the tragic road accident in which a running private bus fell off the Mahanadi Bridge on the outskirts of Cuttack city last evening causing 10 deaths and serious injuries to over 50 passengers, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack (Twin City) Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty today viewed that a detailed investigation can unravel who was responsible for such a fatal mishap.

In his media reactions today, the Police Commissioner said, “Accident never comes with warning. But, if we remain alert and cautious, we can save ourselves from accident. In pursuance of the Supreme Court’s order, our efforts are also on to lessen the death rate 5-10% every year. Accordingly, we have framed our action plan.”

“However, the number of vehicles as well as population is increasing since our economy is booming. Every year, 10-15% more vehicles are plying on the road. Enforcement doesn’t confine to only police action as accident also depends on road engineering and awareness. Engineering, Education and Enforcement are the three major issues that influence road safety. Accident is caused either due to engineering or mechanical failure or reckless driving or some lapses in enforcement. Checking road mishap depends on multi-departmental efforts,” he argued.

On being queried about the main cause behind yesterday’s mishap, the Police Commissioner replied, “Unless and until the investigation is completed, it wouldn’t be right to conclude who is responsible for yesterday’s tragic incident. But the preliminary investigation on the spot reveals that a buffalo strayed onto the bridge all at once. The driver might have tried to apply brake and might have lost balance. These all can be known and ascertained after detailed investigation. Only after the detailed investigation is completed, it can be ascertained who is responsible for the accident.”
