Bhubaneswar: Following a review of the flood situation by Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra and SRC Pradeep Kumar Jena, eight out of 34 open sluice gates of the Hirakud Dam were closed today afternoon.
While 5.71 lakh cusec water was being discharged with 34 gates open, after eight sluice gates were closed, the outflow from Hirakud remained under 4.50 lakh cusec, data shared by the Water Resources department at 3 pm revealed.
The Hirakud Dam reservoir held 621.54 lakh cusec water while receiving more than 9.85 lakh cusec from the upstream where rains continue to lash Chhattisgarh.
At 3 pm today, Mahanadi’s discharge at Khairmal in Sonepur’s Binika tehsil was 11.45 lakh cusec while the discharge at Munduli barrage in Cuttack was 9.87 lakh cusec. By Monday night, the peak flood is expected to reach Munduli when the discharge is expected to reach 12 lakh cusec, reports stated.
