**Bhubaneswar:** The Union Cabinet approved the much awaited proposal for the constitution of Mahanadi Water Sharing Disputes Tribunal on Tuesday. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) will nominate the chairman and other members for the Tribunal.
It is worth mentioning that Odisha Government repeatedly demanded for the formation of this tribunal and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik used to cordially remind up Prime Minister Narendra Modi from time to time for the Tribunal constitution to resolve the Mahanadi water sharing dispute with neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
But the Centre had earlier filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court refusing to form the sought-after Tribunal highlighting that Odisha was not cooperating with the Centre.
The apex court finally passed its verdict in favour of Odisha following which the Centre was compelled to constitute the Tribunal.
