Mahila Congress Activists Arrested During Attempt To Gherao Naveen Niwas

**Bhubaneswar:** Police arrested over 150 activists of Mahila Congress on Thursday during an attempt to gherao Naveen Niwas, residence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, in Bhubaneswar demanding the resignation of Minister Pradeep Maharathy.

Around 300-350 members of the Mahila Congress marched towards Naveen Niwas today protesting the CM’s silence over statement of Maharathy hailing the verdict in Pipili gang rape and murder case.

Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Kumar Sahoo informed, the Mahila Congress activists were intercepted by police near Sishu Bhawan Square. As the activists scuffled with police, they were detained and placed under preventive arrest.

President of the Mahila Congress, Sumitra Jena, said they will continue their agitation till Maharathy resigns from his post. Mahila Congress will chase Maharathy everywhere and protest against him, she added.

They also alleged that Odisha Government is mum on such a sensitive issue.

On the contrary, BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra countered, “Those who are raising a question mark on the State Government and alleging silence, they are wrong in their statements. State Government has done everything on this case starting from the Crime Branch probe to filing of charge sheet. Already Crime Branch has appealed in the High Court against the lower court’s verdict. The State Government is never sitting silent.”
