Bhubaneswar: Malkangiri Adarsh Police successfully arrested a man from Assam in connection with a cheating case involving a local businessman.

The accused, identified as Debajit Tripathy, had allegedly duped Jitendra Patra, a businessman from Malkangiri’s Talsahi area, of Rs 80 lakh.

According to the complaint lodged by Patra on September 4, Tripathy had approached him in 2017, claiming to have opened a company called Commodity Trading in Malkangiri. He promised Patra that if he invested money in trading, he would receive a 20% return within three months. Patra initially invested some money and received the promised returns after three months.

Encouraged by this, he invested a total of Rs 80 lakh through various accounts. However, when the three-month period expired, Patra failed to receive his returns. By the time he tried to contact Tripathy, the accused had fled Malkangiri.

Helpless Patra filed a complaint with the Malkangiri police, who have now arrested Tripathy from Assam.

Interestingly, this is not the first case against Tripathy, as he has five pending cases registered against him at the Malkangiri police station. The police are conducting further investigation into the matter and will produce the accused in court.
