Bhubaneswar: In the wake of the high voltage protest by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo-cum-West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against the CBI’s action in Kolkata last (Sunday) evening to round up Kolkata Police Commissioner but aborted by the State Police personnel, Odisha’s ruling BJD disapproved the CBI's actions and main opposition Congress today rallied behind Mamata’s protest while BJP termed it as political drama.

In his statement on the floor of Lok Sabha today, BJD Parliamentary Party Leader Bhartruhari Mahtab said, “The incident that occurred last evening smacks of impropriety. The manner in which CBI officers wanted to barge into Kolkata Police Commissioner’s residence, that too with 40 personnel, was unheard of. It is something which demonstrates and also questions the institutional integrity of CBI.”

He added, “The manner in which CBI has been functioning during the last 2-3 months time, it does not show any professionalism. And that is manner in which CBI has come into such criticism today.”

He also remarked, “We are not a banana republic. There are instances, especially during the last few years, situation has aggravated to such an extent where institutions are being derided because of certain motivated actions of certain personnel. This should be stopped at all quarters.”

“Odisha has also seen CBI officers barging into a sitting judge’s residence, that too, in the early hours of the morning some months back. And just before the Panchayat election, adequate steps were also taken by the CBI just to defame Biju Janata Dal (BJD). And it has started emanating again in Odisha also just to defame the leaders of BJD. This smacks of unprofessionalism and we want CBI should be a professional institution and also should target those people who are indulging in corruption. But the manner in which CBI is functioning today, as if, it is a political tool, a political weapon at the hands of the power at the Centre,” the senior BJD MP lambasted.

BJD also made it clear that they are not rallying behind Mamata's protest against CBI's such action but categorically disapproved the way CBI is acting under the whims and fancies of the Centre.

Senior Congress MLA Narasingha Mishra reacted, “As per the counsel of West Bengal Government’s argument at the Supreme Court, the West Bengal High Court has issued some directives pertaining to the protection of the top police officer in question. In this context, the CBI has breached the High Court’s order. What is right and what is wrong will be clear today when the Supreme Court will examine the deposition and take a decision.”

He lambasted, “Now democracy in India is under threat. The language, the Prime Minister used against the West Bengal Chief Minister during his speech in the State recently, is unprecedented. Such a behaviour was never heard from any other Prime Ministers of our country. The incumbent Prime Minister did not maintain any decency and hurled abuses during his criticism. It’s condemnable.”

He added, “Not only that, the Central Government is now using the CBI for political purpose. Issuing notice in a bid to scare up political opponents or threatening to arrest. In some places, arrest is also being made. Hence, a question mark has been raised on the Federal structure of the Constitution.”

“To sum up, whatever Mamata Banerjee is arguing, she is correct. If the Centre uses the CBI against its opposition in a bid to exert political pressure, what the opposition will do,” the senior Congress leader quipped.”

On the contrary, Odisha BJP MLA Pradeep Purohit reacted, “Obviously it will be an issue in West Bengal and BJP will definitely make mass awareness against Mamata Banerjee’s dramatics and her shielding of the chit fund accused. Despite Mamata Banerjee’s dharna (sit-in demonstration) and high drama, the persons on CBI’s target will surely be arrested in days to come.”
