Keonjhar: In yet another instance of man-animal conflict, a woman was killed in a wild pachyderm attack at Banbiharipur village in Telkoi forest in Odisha’s Keonjhar district. The incident occurred on Wednesday night and woman breathed her last during treatment on Thursday early morning.
The deceased has been identified as Draupadi Naik, wife of Dwitikrishna Naik. She was also a ward member of Akula Panchayat No. 10.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday night when Draupadi had gone to a mango grove near her house to collect mangoes after a thunderstorm. In the mango grove, she was severely attacked by a wild elephant. However, an injured Draupadi somehow managed to reach her house after the attack.
Draupadi’s family members rushed her to Telkoi Medical Center where she died during treatment this morning.
Meanwhile, the Forest Department has given a compensation of Rs 60,000 to the family of the deceased in the first phase.
Forest Department officials said that a 15-year-old elephant inhabits the Banbiharipur area and it could be responsible for Draupadi’s death.
