Berhampur: The death of a woman and her minor daughter due to a snake bite at Adheibaranga under Kabisuryanagar police limits in Ganjam took a dramatic turn after police today revealed that a mother-daughter duo was killed by releasing a snake into their bedroom.
The accused identified as Ganesh Patra, husband of the woman, has been arrested and forwarded to court, Ganjam SP Jagmohan Meena said.
The incident took place on the night of October 6, 2023, the SP said. Police had registered a case of unnatural death in the next day.
Suspecting foul play, the father of the deceased woman lodged a complaint alleging murder.
Accordingly, IIC Pravat launched an investigation based on his complaint. After an inquiry, it was known that marital discord was the reason behind the crime.
“Accused Ganesh had a long-standing marital dispute with his wife. He planned to eliminate her by releasing a venomous snake. Accordingly, Pravat contacted many snake handlers in the locality and finally managed to obtain a cobra from at Polsara area,” the SP added.
He brought the reptile on the pretext of special worship and threw it at his sleeping wife and daughter in the bedroom on October 6 night, the SP added.
“The snake charmer is cooperating with the investigation. We will record his statement as a witness,” the SP informed.
