Cuttack: The Commissionerate Police in Cuttack have arrested a youth, who had allegedly duped a woman of Rs 33,800 under the pretext of providing her son with a job as a Second Officer in the Merchant Navy at Sharjah.
The accused who was arrested on Tuesday by the Chauliaganj police has been identified as one Soumya Ranjan Mishra of Patipur under Kissan Nagar police limits in Cuttack district.
Police have seized one Maruti Suzuki Baleno car, Rs 33,800 in cash and a mobile phone from the accused.
According to a press release issued by the DCP, Cuttack Urban Police District, one Kalpana Sahu, a resident of Mahanadi Vihar had reported at the Chauliaganj police station that her son on October 22 had received a phone call from one Soumya Ranjan Mishra impersonating as the son of an important person offered to provide him with an appointment in Sharjah as 2nd Officer in Merchant Navy along with US Visa.
As per the accused’s instruction, Sahu remitted Rs 33,800 to the former through Paytm to get the job for her son in the Merchant Navy.
Accused Mishra after getting the money avoided the complainant and her son and reportedly switched off his mobile. Left with little option complainant Sahu reported the matter at Chauliaganj police station.
During the course of investigation, the police found accused Mishra to be a habitual cheat. On interrogation of Mishra police found that the former’s modus operandi was to cheat innocent people by impersonating himself as the son of an important person and himself being an officer in the Merchant Navy on the false pretext of providing them with alluring jobs in foreign countries.
