Bhanjanagar: In a shocking broad daylight incident, a 44-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death with an axe outside the Additional District Judge (ADJ) court in Bhanjanagar town of Ganjam district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Ashok Kumar Swain of Buduli village.
According to reports, Ashok had come to the Bhanjanagar ADJ court to attend the hearing of a case. After completing his court-related work and while coming out of the court premises, he was suddenly attacked by a man wielding a sharp weapon just outside the court.
The assailant allegedly struck Ashok multiple times with an axe, inflicting deep injuries on his head and both hands. The brutal assault took place in front of passersby, triggering panic in the area.
Local residents quickly intervened and managed to overpower the accused before informing the police. The injured Ashok was rushed to the Bhanjanagar Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead while he was undergoing treatment.
Police reached the spot, seized the axe used in the crime, and detained the accused for questioning. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained.
The gruesome murder near the court complex, located just a short distance from the Bhanjanagar police station, has created a sensation in the town. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
