Kendrapara: One Sunakar Kandi of Chanchina village under Derabish police limits of Kendrapara district had to undergo a similar ordeal today that Dana Majhi of Melaghar village in Thuamul-Rampur block of Kalahandi district had undergone in 2016 of carrying his wife’s corpse on his shoulders for 10 km after allegedly being denied a hearse by the government hospital.
According to reports, Kandi had admitted his daughter Baisakhi, a student of class 6 at the district headquarters hospital here in the morning today after she was bitten by a snake. However, Baisakhi died while undergoing treatment.
As no hearse was available at the hospital, the deceased’s uncle and another relative had to carry her corpse on a bike for 20 km to reach their village Chanchina.
However, attempts to get the reaction of Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Anita Patnaik on the incident have not been successful.
The incident has exposed the state of affairs in government hospitals.
After the Dana Majhi episode in 2016, the State government had started hearse services under the name of Mahaprayan to help transport bodies.
