Cuttack: One Gyana Ranjan Jena died after his car fell into Taldanda Canal here on Monday. Jena’s wife, Anjana survived narrowly and is under treatment at a hospital.
Jena, a resident of Kandarpur was staying on rent at Sartol with his family. Today, while returning from a private hospital in CDA to Sartol, Jena took a shortcut along the Taldanda canal on which construction activity for renovation is underway.
After travelling for some distance he spotted the road has been closed for construction. Now Jena decided to take the main road for which he started reversing the car.
However, due to lack of space, the car skid, and rolled down around 35 feet into the canal which had water in it, which led to the tragedy.
Jena and his wife were rescued by police with the help of locals and were rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead.
The couple had gone to a private hospital for scheduling Anjana’s knee surgery and while returning they stopped at a bank near College Square to withdraw Rs 2 lakh.
The car was retrieved from the canal and the cash was handed over to a family member of the deceased. Meanwhile, the incident sparked resentment among the people of Cuttack who blamed the authorities for the tragedy.
“There is no marking here notifying commuters that the road is closed and construction work is underway. Had they been stopped from taking this route, this man would not have died,” locals said.
The Commissionerate of Police registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for autopsy.
