Bhubaneswar: A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly cheating a woman and her family of ₹22.70 lakh by impersonating a doctor and a bank official on a matrimony website, police said on Thursday.
The accused was arrested in connection with a case registered at the Pahal police station on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh confirmed.
According to the complaint, the woman had created a profile on a matrimony platform in 2021, where she came in contact with a man who introduced himself as a doctor. He claimed that he was looking for a suitable bride for his brother.
Police said that between June and December 2021, the accused extracted money from the complainant and her family on various pretexts related to the proposed marriage. The total amount defrauded was ₹22.70 lakh.
During the investigation, it was found that the accused used two different mobile numbers to impersonate a doctor and a bank official. Technical analysis revealed that both numbers were operated from the same handset and linked to the same individual, exposing the fraud.
Police are now probing whether the accused targeted other women using similar tactics on matrimonial platforms. Further investigation is underway.
