Keonjhar: The Keonjhar District & Sessions Court on Friday sentenced one Susanta Nayak to undergo life imprisonment after convicting him of rape and murder. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Nayak.
The court ordered that on failure to pay the fine Nayak has to undergo imprisonment for one month more.
The court convicted Nayak based on depositions of 20 witnesses and other evidence.
However, the other accused persons in the case were acquitted by the court for lack of evidence.
According to details of the case, in 2022 Nayak of Basantapur village under Pandapada police limits of Keonjhar district had asked his lover (the victim) to come to the backside of his house. After his lover arrived at the backside of the house Nayak along with his friends raped her by turns.
They then murdered her before dumping the body in an abandoned pond nearby.
The next day, family members on finding the body floating in the pond informed the Pandapada police. Police with the help of a scientific team investigated the matter. Nayak was arrested and forwarded to court.
