Baripada: A court today awarded life imprisonment to a 62-year-old man in a murder case that took place three years ago in Baisinga area of Mayurbhanj district.
The additional district and sessions (1) court in Baripada convicted Shyama Sundar Barik of Nuagaan under Baisinga police limits and sentenced him to life term for murdering one Radhakrushna Barik over past rivalry.
Judge Satya Narayan Patra pronounced the verdict based on statements of 11 witnesses, medical reports and investigation reports.
He was convicted under sections 302 and 324 of IPC, said government lawyer Krushna Chandra Dash.
He would undergo nine months more imprisonment if he fails to pay a fine of Rs 52,000, the judge clarified in his judgment.
The murder took place in January, 2020 when Shyama Sundar engaged in an altercation with Radhakrushna near a betel shop in the village over some previous issues. Shyam Sunder ran away following the intervention of local people.
In a fit of rage, he was hiding in a place in the village to attack Radhakrusna. When Radhakrushna and his relative Harekrushna Barik were passing through the road, Shyamasundar attacked him with a stick. Radhakrishna was seriously injured in the attack. He later died on the way to the hospital.
Wife of Radhakrushna had lodged a complaint against Shyamsundar at Baisinga police station.
