Malkangiri: A man was brutally murdered with a sharp weapon while he was asleep outside his house in Kurampali village under Mathili police station limits late Thursday night. The deceased has been identified as Niranjan Thakur.
According to reports, while Niranjan was sleeping outside, his daughter and son-in-law were asleep inside the house. Taking advantage of the darkness, unidentified miscreants allegedly locked the door from outside and then attacked Niranjan, slashing his neck with a sharp weapon. He died on the spot.
On being informed, Mathili police reached the spot and launched an investigation. Though the exact motive is not yet clear, villagers suspect the murder could be linked to a case of mistaken identity. However, the family members have said they do not suspect anyone at this stage.
Mathili IIC Dipanjali Pradhan said the matter is under investigation and the cause behind the killing can be established only after further inquiry.
The gruesome incident has spread panic in the area, with locals expressing concern over the audacity of the attackers and urging police to bring the culprits to book.
