Puri: Amid the sacred rituals and heavy police deployment for Snana Purnima of Lord Jagannath and his siblings- Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, a gruesome murder has shocked residents and pilgrims in Puri. The incident took place at Rabeni Choura of Gudiashahi, under the Town Police Station limits in Puri.
According to reports, the deceased identified as Jagannath Dikshit, a resident of Mahasuar Sahi, was found murdered in a pool of blood near the residence of Narayan Patjoshi, the man now suspected to be behind the killing.
The motive behind Jagannath’s visit to Narayan’s home remains unclear, but early indications suggest that the crime may have been the result of an ongoing personal enmity.
The murder, committed in broad daylight, has raised serious questions about security in the city despite the deployment of over 70 platoons of police personnel for Snana Purnima, which drew large crowds to the Shree Jagannath Temple and surrounding areas. Shocked locals expressed concern over how such a violent act could occur during a high-alert period meant to ensure public safety.
The IIC of Town Police Station Gokul Ranjan Das with is team is currently investigating the case. Police officials arrived promptly at the scene and have begun collecting forensic evidence and recording statements from local residents.
Meanwhile, the prime suspect, Narayan Patjoshi, is reportedly on the run. Police have launched a manhunt to trace his whereabouts.
The incident has cast a dark shadow over what is otherwise one of the most sacred and festive days in Puri’s religious calendar.
