Man Sets Family On Fire In Brajarajnagar, Niece Succumbs, Three Others Critical

Jharsuguda: In a tragic and barbaric incident, a minor girl succumbed to the burns inflicted by a fire which was set by her maternal uncle. The tragedy took place in Brajarajnagar’s Hari Omm Vihar area on January 10. In this incident, four members of one family sustained serious burns, among whom, a minor girl, Ismit Kaur succumbed today at Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela.

Three other family members are undergoing treatment at IGH.

According to reports, one Rabindra Singh allegedly set his family members – mother, brother, elder sister and niece on fire. All this was done reportedly because of acquiring family property. Recently, Singh sustained severe losses in business and was under mental duress, said reports.

“He got married to a girl who was not accepted by his family. This could be another reason which instigated Singh to commit this heinous act,” the police said. So far, three persons including Singh and a minor boy have been arrested in this case.

Rabindra Singh had attempted to eliminate his mother Baljit Kaur, sister Manjeet Kaur, the minor niece, and brother Rajendra Singh. He planned and committed the crime after observing the ‘Shraddh’ (death anniversary) of their patriarch Gurmeet Singh, the police added.

The three accused have been booked on murder charges and forwarded to court.
