Koraput: A man and his son were rescued by police after tension prevailed in Nandigan village under Nandapur police limits in Koraput district following the suicide of a person in the village.
Reportedly, Bhagban Champi of the village had gone to his field on Thursday but was later found hanging from a tree. Following the incident, tension erupted in the village accusing one Dambru Champi and his son Urdhab Champi of practicing witchcraft.
On getting information, Nandapur Police Station IIC Prafulla Lakra and SDPO Sanjay Kumar Mahapatra reached the village with one platoon of police force and rescued the family. A peace meeting was also held in the village.
The families of the deceased and the rescued persons had been in conflict for a few months and had been accusing each other of practicing witchcraft. A complaint in this regard has also been lodged at Nandapur Police Station.
A meeting regarding the allegations was to be held in the village on Sunday. However, the death of Bhagban escalated the matter. SDPO Mahapatra said that a probe has been initiated to ascertain the truth behind Bhagban’s death.
