Berhampur: In a grisly incident, a man was allegedly tied to an electric pole and beaten to death by villagers at Chingudighai under Purusottampur police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday on the suspicion that he was a thief. The police have arrested five persons in connection with the crime.

The deceased has been identified as Bahuda Sahoo of Puri district.

According to the reports, Sahoo was found roaming in Chingudighai village on Wednesday last. When the local villagers caught Bahuda and questioned him about his identity and why he was loitering in Chingudighai, he reportedly could not give a satisfactory reply. Suspecting that he had come to the village for robbery, the locals tied him to an electric pole and brutally thrashed him to death.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms.

After Bahuda breathed his last on the spot on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, locals dumped his body under a tree near the local primary school, informed Purusottampur SDPO Rajnikant Samal.

Later, Sahoo’s brother approached the police and filed a written complaint regarding the gruesome incident. Based on the complaint the police registered a murder case (No. 303) and launched a probe into the incident.

During the investigation, it was learned that Sahoo was nabbed by villagers in Chingudighai while he was roaming in the village. Later, they took him to the village rest house and tied him to an electric pole, and beat him to death.

Purusottampur SDPO Rajnikant Samal informed that police have already arrested five persons in this connection and forwarded them to court. It has come to our notice that some other people were also involved in the incident and they will be arrested soon.

Further investigation is underway into the matter.
