Malkangiri: Rengakhar police in neighbouring Chhattisgarh state today arrested a 33-year man who planted a bomb in a home theatre system which he gave as a wedding gift to his ex-lover.
The man’s ex-lover’s husband along with his brother died in an explosion on Monday after they plugged the home theatre system into the wall socket and switched on power at Chamari village under Rengakhar police limits in Kabirdham district of Chhattisgarh.
The accused has been identified as Sanju alias Sarju Markam, a mechanic hailing from Balaghat in Chhapla district of Madhya Pradesh.
“We have cracked the case pertaining to the blast in Chamari village under Rengakhar police limits. We have arrested the accused identified as Sanju alias Sarju Markam who had a relationship with the bride,” informed Lal Umendra Singh, SP, Kawardh (Chhattisgarh).
Singh said that after the girl refused to marry him, Sanju hatched a conspiracy and prepared an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) using ammonium nitrate, petrol and gunpowder retrieved from firecrackers. He planted the explosive in the sound system and gift-wrapped it to avoid suspicion. The sound system exploded when it was connected to power, Singh added.
He said that a case has been registered under sections 302 and 307 of IPC and relevant sections of the Explosives Act at Rengakhar police station in this connection.
The SP said that the bride and bridegroom were the main targets of the accused. The accused had himself carried the device and put it near the marriage mandap, he added.
The police said that Sanju had previously worked in a quarry where he learned to assemble bombs.
