Maoist Crossfire: One Jawan Martyred And Several Injured

**Berhampur: ** SOG jawans and Maoists exchanged fire near Khamankhol under Baliguda police limit in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

One jawan identified as Sh Lakshmikanta Jani from Kalahandi, has been martyred. Seven others along with the driver have sustained injuries. The injured have been shifted to MKCG medical college and hospital for treatment.

While four injured jawans, Markand Carji, Thabir Tandi, Nirmal Dhal and Hemant Kumar Nayak are undergoing treatment in MKCG here, other three, Harish Chandra Tamango, Suman Herenge and Niranjan Behera are admitted to Phulbani medical.

According to reports, the Maoists attacked the last vehicle of security forces, when they were returning after an operation. The jawans retaliated by firing back. The exchange of fire lasted for around an hour. More than three hundred rounds were fired along with UBGLs .

Reinforcement has been mobilized and search operation on in the area.

Meanwhile, SOG Deputy Commandant Avinash Kumar has reached the spot besides DGP K.B. Singh, IG Operation R.P. Koche, souther range IG Amitabh Thakur, DIG SIW Narasingha Bhol and SOG Commandant Anup Krishna.

Meanwhile, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has condemned the attack in his tweet.

In his reactions, Odisha’s Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Asit Tripathy said, “Operations on in Kandhamal, Kalahandi. We’ll give fitting reply.”

He also informed that compensation to the martyrs, critically injured and injured to be as per the amended package.

On the other hand, Odisha Havildar & Sepoy Mahasangh has demanded Rs 1 crore ex gratia for the bereft family of the martyred SOG jawan as well as job rehabilitation to his kin in 15 days.
