Rourkela: In a significant development, Maoist leader Ablem Honez alias Prabhu surrendered before the Rourkela police on Tuesday, marking another instance of cadres quitting the banned outfit and returning to the mainstream.

Prabhu, a native of Halamuli village under the Chhotanagra police station limits in neighbouring Jharkhand, had joined the Maoist organisation around two years ago while he was still a minor. During his association with the outfit, he worked as part of the team led by top Maoist leader Anmol.

According to police sources, Prabhu was entrusted with multiple responsibilities within the organisation. His duties included carrying firearms, keeping surveillance on police and security forces, and assisting in the relocation of Maoist camps from one location to another. He also provided logistical support during Maoist violent activities.

Despite his involvement in these operations, Prabhu later decided to sever ties with the Maoist organisation and surrender before the authorities.

Addressing a press conference, Western Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Brijesh Rai said that the surrendered Maoist would be extended all possible cooperation in accordance with the government’s rehabilitation and surrender policy.

Police officials said the surrender reflects growing disenchantment among Maoist cadres and reiterated that those willing to renounce violence and join the mainstream would be encouraged and supported under existing government schemes.
