Malkangiri: Malkangiri district’s borders with Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh have been sealed off and an alert has been sounded across the region in view the PLGA Week of the outlawed CPI(Maoist) from December 2-8. The Left Wing Extremists (LWE) is celebrating the 24th anniversary of their ‘Martyrs Day’ to pay respect to their comrades killed in encounters with police.
According to reports, all vehicles entering the district are being strictly checked. At the same time, combing operations have been intensified by BSF, SOG and DVF jawans. The Intelligence agencies of the government are also keeping a close watch on all the movements of the Maoists in the region for the last few days.
While the Maoists do not have much influence in the district, they can trigger any untoward incident any moment. In addition to targeting security personnel, police informers are the main target of the Maoists. After the withdrawal of MV 79, MV 82 and MV 88 BSF camps, the Maoists are said to be entering Odisha through the Podia and Motu borders, as was evident from the Jinelguda encounter incident on November 21.
Meanwhile, a press communiqué issued by the South Sub-Zonal Bureau in neighbouring Chhattisgarh has caused concern among the authorities here. Aside from appealing to the people to observe the 24th PLGA Week, the communiqué opposed the ongoing Operation Kagar in Chhattisgarh.
