Bhubaneswar: A marathon supporting the world cancer day commenced in the city on Friday. The event to spread awareness on cancer was organised by Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited in association with Apollo Hospitals.
World cancer day is celebrated worldwide on the 4th of February. Under the supervision of Kamaljit Das (GM administration BSCL), the Smart City team in the association with Apollo hospitals organised a marathon.
People from different walks of life participated in the event.
“There are now a growing number of patients having cancer in different stages of their treatment. Statistics show how many people are diagnosed with and die from cancer each year. It also explains how by looking at cancer rates over the period, we can change the path in the risk of developing and dying from specific cancers as well as cancer overall,” the organisers said.
Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Singh said, “Together we can create progress in reducing the impact of cancer by spreading awareness. Oncologist Dr Chinmay Kumar Pani shared that most people are unaware of the disease and its symptoms and the risks involved.
“The danger lies in not realising the consequences and ignoring the early symptoms. The earlier the cancer is detected the more likely it is to be cured,” he said.
NALCO CMD Sridhar Patra, Dr Sanjay Mishra (Radiation Oncologist), Sudhir M Diggikar (Regional CEO Apollo Hospitals), Saroj Kumar Das (General Manager BSCL) and eminent persons were also part of the marathon.
