Bhubaneswar: Twelve minors are among the 18 that were arrested today in the Market building attack case, said Commissioner of Police Dr Sudhanshu Sarangi.
Briefing the media on the appalling case, he said that a case under categories of rioting, promoting disharmony, wrongful loss or damage to the public or any person, and causing destruction of any property has been filed.
The Police Commissioner said, “Among the 30 involved, 21 have been identified. We have arrested 18 so far out of which 12 are minors and the rest are majors. They are Madhab Pradhan, Rabindra Nayak, Chandan Das, K Santosh Kumar, Priyaranjan Das, and Biswanath Pradhan. The prime accused is absconding and a search is underway.”
“The investigation is underway and we will arrest rest of the accused soon. Sadly, most of the accused are school-going children. We hope to build a strong case against the instigators,” he added.
On the argument that led to the rioting situation, the Commissioner said that on Friday evening a brother-sister duo was in a watch shop at Market Building. Two youths Gopi and Chintu misbehaved with them. However, the matter was resolved at nearby police station. But later the main accused came back with a group who ransacked several shops and injured many, said Dr Sarangi.
The Commissioner said that the police acted on time and were able to halt the ransacking. They also arrested two on the spot which then let to further arrests.
