Nabarangpur: In a shocking incident, two masked youths allegedly looted 10 tolas of gold ornaments and ₹20 lakh in cash from a businessman’s residence in the busy Darubandh Sahi area of Nabarangpur on Monday.
According to reports, the accused on Monday evening entered the house of Saroj Mohanty, a businessman, while he was away. Finding Saroj’s wife, Amita Mohanty, alone at home, they attacked her, hitting her on the head, and tied her hands and mouth.
The intruders then held a knife to her neck, demanding money and gold. Despite her resistance, they threatened to kill her and forcibly removed the gold ornaments she was wearing. The assailants further coerced her into opening a cupboard, from which they took a bag containing cash and additional gold ornaments. They also looted valuables from an unlocked cupboard.
Before fleeing, the perpetrators locked Amita inside a room and escaped on a motorbike. Her screams alerted residents living on the ground floor, who rescued her by unlocking the door from outside.
Upon receiving information, Nabarangpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mihir Kumar Panda and local Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) Sambit Kumar Behera arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation.
Nabarangpur SP Panda stated that all exit routes from the town had been sealed and assured that a special team would be formed to apprehend the culprits soon. He further mentioned that a scientific team and a dog squad would visit the crime scene to gather evidence.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the town, raising concerns over the safety and security of residents in the area.
