Bhubaneswar: A large number of animals and birds were slaughtered on the occasion of the annual Chhatar Jatra of Maa Manikeswari, the presiding deity of Kalahandi.
This centuries-old tradition, part of the Durga Puja celebrations, saw animal sacrifices in full public view.
Eyewitnesses reported a large number of animals killed on the road as the procession began.
After 4 am, Goddess Manikeswari’s ‘Vijay Chhatar’ came out of Jenakhol on the outskirts of the city. After the ritualistic secret puja Jenakhol at midnight, the Vijay Chhatar returns to the Chhattar temple.
It will reach Maa Manikeshwari Temple at Royal Palace 12:00 Noon. Devotees released two black and white pigeons over the roof, symbolizing peace and brotherhood.
Thousands of devotees from the district and outside the district have gathered to witness the famous religious fair. 15 platoons of police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order.

Lakhs of people, including devotees from neighbouring states, congregated there to witness the religious procession.
