Baripada: A fast-track court in Mayurbhanj convicted a rape accused and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl.
The convict is a 35-year-old man Ananta Tudu, a resident of Badhunia village under Bisoi police station.
The fast-track court of special judge Santosh Kumar Nayak found Ananta guilty of raping the minor girl on July 8, 2017.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on Tudu, failing which he will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment. The victim will receive Rs 50,000 as compensation from the District Legal Services Authority.
According to the prosecution, Tudu broke into the victim’s house and assaulted her grandmother before taking the girl to a nearby jungle where he committed the crime. The victim’s grandmother screamed for help following which villagers rescued the minor girl.
Tudu was arrested under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of a complaint filed with Bisoi police. He was later produced in the court. The victim also had undergone medical tests.
The arrested accused was convicted based on the statements of the victim, 18 witnesses and the medical report, according to the public prosecutor Manoranjan Patnaik.
