Baripada: The Special POCSO Court at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district on Friday convicted a 34-year-old man in a minor rape case and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI).
The convict, identified as Jamadar Buriuli of Mankididihi village under Tiring police station, was also fined ₹60,000. In case of default, he will have to undergo an additional 18 months of imprisonment.
The court further directed the District Legal Services Authority to provide ₹7 lakh as compensation to the rape survivor.
According to case details, the incident occurred on August 24, 2021, when a village feast was underway. Exploiting the situation, the accused lured the minor to a nearby forest and raped her. After the victim narrated the ordeal to her family, a written complaint was lodged at Tiring police station. Police registered a case, recorded the victim’s statement, arrested Buriuli, and submitted the chargesheet in court.
After examining witness testimonies, medical evidence, and police reports, the court delivered the judgment. The prosecution was led by Special Public Prosecutor Abhinna Kumar Pattnayak.
