Bhubaneswar: In an instance of taking the law into their hands, villagers at Karanjia in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district tied up two alleged kidnappers to a pole and thrashed them mercilessly at a kangaroo court. Finally, the police intervened in the matter on Wednesday and rescued the two villagers identified as Mamata Mahakud and Afzal Ansari of Batapalasa village and Karanjia Banasai respectively.
According to reports, Mamata and Afzal reportedly went inside the house of one Anam Dehury on Tuesday and kidnapped the latter’s 13-year-old daughter from Batapalasa village on the pretext of taking her to witness the Rath Yatra. Her family and villagers launched a search for the girl when she did not return till late in the evening.
Some villagers claimed that they had seen the girl going somewhere on a motorcycle with Mamata and Afzal. Soon after this, villagers nabbed Mamata and Afzal and tied them to a pole near the village water tank. The two alleged accused were beaten up mercilessly till the police arrived on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, the missing girl is yet to be traced by the police and villagers. Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
