MCL Mines Mishap: Death Toll Rises To 3, Odisha CM Announces Ex-Gratia

Angul: Two days after the landslide mishap at Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. (MCL) Mines in Bharatpur here, the death toll rose to three on Friday as bodies of two more labourers were recovered from the debris.

The deceased has been identified as Sibarampur pump house operator Kartikeswar Mohapatra and Supervisor Rashmi Ranjan Behera.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased persons. He also conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved families.

On Tuesday night, a dump slide at an open cast mine in Talcher trapped 13 workers and machinery at work. While nine were rescued in critical condition and rushed to Central Hospital for treatment, body of one Papuna Biswal had been recovered from the debris on Wednesday. One is still feared trapped. 

Earlier today, severed leg of a person was also recovered from the site. Rescue operation is still underway with the help of MCL’s mines rescue team, local police and MCL security personnel to search for the missing worker.
